New Miss Iowa Nicole Kelly, to advocate for others, like herself, with disabilities

DAVENPORT - A Keokuk woman has been chosen as Miss Iowa and will compete in the Miss America Pageant this fall.

The Quad-City Times reported 22-year-old Nicole Kelly won Saturday after a three-day competition in Davenport. She is the reigning Miss Metro.

Kelly, 23, is the daughter of Mike and Pam Kelly, and will represent Iowa in the Miss America Pageant.

Her biography on the Miss Iowa website states that Kelly was born without her left forearm. Her Miss Iowa charitable platform is helping others to overcome disabilities.

The biography says: "As I grew up, I learned to counterbalance the initial stares I received from people with an outgoing personality that would not give into "no." This means that I tried everything. From baseball, to dance, to diving - there is nothing I would not try. I found my passion within a world where I was giving people permission to stare: the stage."

Kelly is majoring in directing and theater management at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and aspires to work on Broadway.

Her biography says she has interned recently in New York City with the Broadway theatre company Manhattan Theatre Club and in Chicago with the Goodman Theatre. She has also worked on the Broadway play The Assembled Parties.

She is the 72nd woman to hold the title of Miss Iowa.

Parents of Miss Iowa 2012, Mariah Cary of Burlington, were on hand Saturday, helping get the final touches for the pageant in order.

The first runner-up was 24-year-old Isabella Blaine, of West Des Moines.

The Miss America Pageant is Sept. 15 in Atlantic City, N.J.

Emma Kate Wichman, 15, of Pleasant Valley, won the title of Miss Iowa’s Outstanding Teen and will represent Iowa in the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant in Orlando, Fla., in August.
