CRPD ACTION ALERT FOR ILLINOIS
www.disabilitytreaty.org
#ISupportCRPD

WE NEED YOUR HELP on the CRPD -- NOW!
Thank you for your continued dedication to U.S. ratification of the Disability Treaty.  Together, we can get this done!
We are so fired up that the coalition now includes more than 650 local, state and national groups!  We need everyone to contact their Senators with the message that you support the Disability Treaty.
Senator Kirk has pledged to support the disability treaty – please call and continue to thank him for his support of the CRPD!

CALL SENATOR KIRK DURING THE AUGUST RECESS!
  • Senator Kirk is at home in Illinois during the August recess, which lasts until September 9th.
  • We ask you to make calls, visit Senator Kirk’s office, send emails, and send letters to the editor in Illinois thanking the Senator for his support.  You can see a list of local newspapers here.
  • You can contact Senator Kirk here:
    • Senator Kirk Office Number: 312-886-3506
    • Senator Kirk Office Addresses: You can see a list of offices here.
    • Senator Kirk Office E-mail Address: You can contact the Senator through his website form here.

REMEMBER
Ø  We would love to hear how your call went!  Let us know you called, as well as any information you learned here!

Ø  Forward this alert to others in your community to lift up their voices on this important issue.

Ø  Visit our new website dedicated to the CRPD: www.disabilitytreaty.org.  You can find one pagers, myth/facts, and access a new community webinar.  You can also join the conversation on twitter by following #iSupportCRPD.  While you’re there, you can tweet to Senator Kirk at @SenatorKirk.  Don't delay - we need you now!

GET READY FOR FUTURE ACTION IN SEPTEMBER!
Ø  I want you to be the first to hear about our plan for a national call-in week which will occur during the week of September 9th.  This will be focusing on the chairs of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Corker and Senator Menendez, and asking them to free the treaty and hold a hearing on this important issue.  We will send more information as this event gets closer, but please take this time to gather your networks and get them RAMPED UP for this call-in week!

THE TRUTH CAMPAIGN: ANSWERING THE OPPOSITION
There are three main myths being spread about the treaty and we want to help you answer them for your members.
  • Sovereignty: Let your U.S. Senators know that you care about this treaty and tell them not to get fooled by the lies and misrepresentation of the leaders of the Home School Legal Defense Association.  All human rights treaties passed by the U.S. Senate include the same RUD (RUD = legal binding condition added to treaties) that we have on the Disability Treaty to protect U.S. sovereignty.  U.S. sovereignty has not been affected by these treaties and our sovereignty will not be impacted by this treaty.
  • Abortion: There is nothing in this treaty that changes abortion rights in this country. It simply states that people with disabilities should have the same access to health care as people without disabilities. It is a statement of non-discrimination only NOT a change in U.S. law or policy.
  • Homeschooling/parental rights: This is a non-discrimination treaty that does NOT change our law but confirms our commitment to disability rights and allows us to impact disability rights globally! That means NO changes to U.S. laws covering parental rights.  That means kids can still can get homeschooled - nothing relating to homeschooling changes. Furthermore, the treaty supports people with disabilities and their right to live in the community among family and protects parents and children from separation on the basis of disability.

With your work, we will get this done!  Lead on!
