FCC LAUNCHES SPEAKER SERIES TO HIGHLIGHT AND ENCOURAGE

INNOVATION IN ACCESSIBLE TECHNOLOGIES

University of Colorado Professor Clayton Lewis to Address the `Future of Inclusive Design

Online,' July 16 in Washington

Washington, D.C. The FCC's Accessibility & Innovation Initiative Speaker Series kicks off
Tuesday, July 16, with "The Future of Inclusive Design Online," a presentation by Colorado
Professor Clayton Lewis. This new series aims to highlight and encourage innovation in
accessible communications technologies that will benefit persons with hearing and speech
disabilities.

Speaker: U. of Colorado Professor Clayton Lewis
When: 10 a.m. noon, July 16 (Tech Demo to follow, 12:30 3 pm)
Where: FCC Commission Meeting Room, 445 12th Street, SW, Washington, DC. 20554

Professor Lewis will focus on the evolution of technology, how it is creating challenges to
traditional thinking about making information and services available to people with differing
functional needs and preferences, and providing opportunities for superior access. The
presentation will highlight developments such as:
The shift in focus from access to presentations of content to access of content itself.
Replacement of mass production by customized, individualized creation.
Non-visual access for traditionally "visual" activities like games, interactive simulations,
and visual programming.
The need for useable tools to allow end users to create and customize their own
information environment.
The prospect that technology can automatically create new and different presentations of
information and services.
Policy changes that may be needed to address such opportunities.
Following the presentation, demonstrations of accessible technology solutions will be held,
12:30 - 3 pm, in the FCC's Technology Experience Center located in the same building.

 Clayton Lewis is Professor of Computer Science and Fellow of the Institute of Cognitive Science
at the University of Colorado. He is well known for his work on evaluation methods in user
interface design, including the thinking-aloud and cognitive-walk-through methods.
Professor Lewis's recent work on technology for people with cognitive disabilities has been
presented to the U.S. Access Board Technical Advisory Committee, California State University
at Northridge's Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference, the
Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology Society of North America, the Association
for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Accessible Computing ASSETS
Conference, and other forums.
Professor Lewis has served as Scientist in Residence at the Coleman Institute for Cognitive
Disabilities. He is a member of the ComputerHuman Interaction (CHI) Academy. Professor
Lewis currently serves as a consultant on cloud computing for the National Institute on Disability
and Rehabilitation Research, U.S. Department of Education, where he is co-chair for the
Subcommittee on Technology for the Interagency Committee on Disability Research.
